Application Analysis of Kaolin in Waterborne Coatings

Release time:2021-06-29 14:33:00  Number of views:

Kaolin is a kind of mineral resources, clay and clay rock dominated by Kaolinite group clay minerals. Due to its white and delicate appearance, it is also known as cloud soil.

Analysis of the application of water-soluble coatings

Kaolin has long been used as a filler for coatings and lacquers due to its whiteness, excellent quality and low price, excellent flowability, stable physical properties, and large surface cation exchange capacity. Kaolin used for coatings generally includes two categories: water washed ultra-fine kaolin and calcined ultra-fine kaolin. Among them, calcined kaolin is a newly developed and scientifically designed additive in recent years. As a new functional additive, it has excellent fineness, coverage, softness, wear resistance, opacity, and non folding properties, and maintains excellent color and reliability in high polymer coatings. Kaolin itself is white, and as an additive, it does not have coverage. However, if properly added to white paint or paint, it can have the effect of improving glossiness and enhancing its covering ability.

It must be noted that the proportion of the matrix of water-soluble coatings to the powdery raw materials in the coatings also poses a significant threat to the paint adhesion of kaolin. The reason lies in the fact that the refractive index of the coating substrate is close to that of kaolin. When the substrate is used in large quantities, kaolin particles will cover more of the page, thereby reducing the mapping, reflection, and transmission caused by the page, thus reducing the paint adhesion.
